The Art Collection of Edward Reynolds, Headmaster of Watford Grammar School 1922-38 is likely to cause quite a stir when it goes under the hammer on the 2nd of February.
Mr Reynolds who had a distinguished career in Education and an active interest in the Town, had another passion, that has remained hidden for almost 70 years.
Edward and his wife Gladys bought works of Art by young Artists and commissioned some of the greatest designer craftsman of their day.
The Collection includes two paintings by Eric Ravilious an Artist and designer of great talent, who died age only 39 while serving as a war artist. The paintings titled 'Field Elm'and 'Tilty' have been on a list of missing works, as nobody knew of their whereabouts. They are likely to attract interest from Art Galleries and major collectors.
An Enamel vase by Artist Hubert von Herkomer who lived and worked in Bushey is decorated with mermaids and estimated at £1000-1500.
The Reynolds family commissioned work by members of the Cotswold school, a cabinet by Ernest Gimson has already attracted attention from Museums.
The collection spans two generations of the Reynolds family and only came to light when Mrs Barbara Reynolds [ Edward's daughter in law] died last year.
Ex pupils of Watford recorded memories of Edward Reynolds as a Ambitious Headmaster, and keen sportsman. He was also it seems a man of impeccable taste.
